Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

Two men entered the hospital room. One wore a gray suit with a bulge under the left arm where the Glock 19 was holstered. The other wore black, the color of mourning. “Hello Arturo,” Chaves greeted his lieutenant.

Delgado’s one good eye widened at the sight of his boss. “Dios mio, La Barracuda has returned. How?”

“It is not important,” Chaves said with a wave of his hand. He looked across the room to where the tattooed bodyguard sat in a soft leather chair. “Leave us.”

The man climbed from the seat and left the room without so much as a word. Chaves turned his attention back to the man in the bed. “Tell me what happened, Arturo.”

Delgado focused his one-eyed stare onto the man who stood beside his boss. Sean Black was one of the best field officers that the CIA had. He needed to be if he was sleeping in the same bed as a pit viper such as Chaves. He was ex-Delta, broad shouldered, dark hair, and had experience throughout the sandbox that was the Middle East.

“It was the Americans,” Delgado hissed. “They—they killed your wife and child. It was a missile. I have Coko looking into who it was.”

“I already know who was responsible and they will pay for it. I assure you they will.”

“Who? Who was responsible, jefe?”

“Do not worry. I have another question. How was Lilia before she died?”

“She was fine. ”

“Did she speak of me?”

For the first time, doubt crept into Delgado’s mind. “All of the time, jefe.”

Chaves looked down at Delgado’s right arm. It had a plaster on it, fresh, white. He reached into his pocket and took out a ballpoint pen. “Do you mind if I sign your plaster, Arturo?”

“Jefe?”

“I want to write on your plaster.”

“Su—sure.”

“Thank you, my trusted friend.”

The cartel boss leaned forward and began writing on the plaster. As he did so he spoke soothingly. “I was relieved that Lilia had someone like you, a man I trusted very much, to turn to while I was away, Delgado. It made my time when I was incarcerated a little easier.”

“It was my pleasure, jefe.”

Chaves’ tone changed dramatically. “Tell me Arturo, was it also your pleasure to fuck the whore as well?”

Chaves’ last words were no more than a snarl as his hand with the pen in it moved with the speed of a striking rattler. Before Delgado could perceive what was happening, the pen had been driven through his right eye and up into his brain.

“What the fuck?” Black blurted out as he saw what had been done.

The cartel boss ignored the outburst, instead looking down at the plaster shaking with Delgado’s death spasms. On it was written just one word. “Goodbye.”

“What the hell was that?” Black demanded.

“The man slept with my wife. Do you expect me to forgive that? She is lucky that she is dead. But my daughter? She didn’t deserve what happened to her. And for that, someone must pay.”

“Just remember the deal you have with the CIA,” Black reminded him.
